Course Outlines:
Breakaways and Escapes
A course designed to facilitate release and escape where pursuit is perhaps less likely, e.g., for health carers, or social services staff who make home visits.
The emphasis is on using movement and footwork to break a person's grasp of arms, hair, throat, etc., to enable escape rather than focusing on incapacitating the 'grabber'.
Women's Self-Defence
If you feel that you would be at a disadvantage if attacked by a man, because of his greater size, weight, strength and aggression, then this is the course you need to attend. You CAN beat a man if you know how to fight to your strengths rather than his. This course will show you how.
Intensive Rape Defence Programme (one and two-day options)
This programme includes self-protection strategies, the law of self-defence, impact development and pre-emptive striking, targeting and combination striking, anti-grabbing and anti-grappling tactics, escapes from ground-fighting and pindown situations, defence against knife threats and defence against multiple attackers. It will teach you how to deter a potential attack and fight effectively against a man. You will also discuss a range of issues, including whether to submit or resist, and how to cope with the psychological aftermath of an attack. With 53,239 sex offences reported in 2009 (that's an increase of 2% since 2008) this is a programme that no woman should ignore. One of the most crucial self-defence skills is the ability to strike with the whole of your body-weight, so that you can still be effective even if you're slightly built. You may have gained some awareness of this skill from our other courses, but here we specialise in learning and refining it. Another key skill you will develop is the psychological ability to strike first, armed with the knowledge of when it is legal to do so. Be prepared to work quite hard but, whether you're male or female, big or small, this course will more than justify the effort if you ever need to use what you've learned. This is one of the most important self-defence courses that we run, and it’s also an excellent ‘first’ course. Essential Self-Defence for Men
Impact Development and Pre-Emptive Striking
According to UK police statistics, 96% of assaults on men begin in only ten ways. This programme will teach you how to defend yourself against these ten most common forms of attack. You will also learn the key principles upon which effective self-defence is based, so that you will be able to adapt what you've learned to suit any situation you may find yourself in. Aimed mainly (but not exclusively) at the professionals – police, prison officers, door supervisors, security staff and personnel in secure units and similar institutions – this programme provides instruction on simple but effective detention techniques, for both compliant and non-compliant individuals, plus how to defend third parties from attack. Professionals are often placed in the unenviable position of being expected to exercise a greater degree of restraint in dealing with a violent individual than ordinary people who are simply defending themselves. Learning how to do so without endangering yourself is essential. Self-Defence on the Ground The vast majority of violent encounters last less than ten seconds, but those that continue for longer often end up on the ground. In a self-defence situation, that's a dangerous place to be, and your primary concern must be to get to your feet again, as quickly as possible. This is where ground-fighting for self-defence differs from MMA, ju-jitsu, judo and other combat sports. Learn how to escape from vulnerable positions and finish ground-fights fast. This is an advanced course and requires some form of prior training before undertaking it. Please discuss it with us if this course interests you. Defence against Multiple Attackers It is extremely difficult to defend yourself against two, three or more assailants, but you can defend yourself effectively in a series of one-to-one situations in rapid succession. Learn these crucial tactics and learn how to apply your existing self-defence skills in one of the most dangerous situations you can face. This is an advanced course and requires some form of prior training before undertaking it. Please discuss it with us if this course interests you. Defence against knives and edged weapons
It is now almost commonplace for many people, especially youths, to carry knives, sharpened screwdrivers, etc., either to defend themselves against a perceived threat or to assist them in committing crime. In 2009 there were 42,448 reported knife & sharp instrument related incidents, including 196 murders (4 per week) and 280 attempted murders.
You will learn how simplicity is the key to effective self-defence. The common myths and misconceptions about self-defence and martial arts will be dispelled, and you will be given guidance on how to find a good self-defence club local to you, and avoid the bad ones, so that you can continue your training with confidence.

Physical Intervention: Control and Restraint (CNR) & Third Party Protection

Most domestic burglars don't bring a knife with them when they break into your house. They'll use one of yours from your own kitchen block. There were 275, 972 burglaries in 2009 (756 per day). This course focuses on how to prioritise your responses to knife threats and, if unavoidable, how to disarm your assailant. You will also learn how to defend yourself against bottles, beer glasses and other sharp weapons. We will also discuss 'how far you can go' to legally defend yourself against a burglar. Our second specialised weapon-defence course dealing with an array of 'blunt instruments', from baseball bats to hammers and pool cues. The principles behind them all are the same. Learn how to deal with them simply, but effectively. Defence against firearms A specialised course for defence against firearms, obviously at extremely close range. We won't teach you to catch bullets with your teeth, but we will teach you techniques derived mainly from the close-quarter combat system used by the Israeli armed forces, to safely disarm your aggressor if no other option is available to you. Again, this course is mainly, but not exclusively, for those who may face firearms as an occupational hazard. All of the above courses are largely physical in nature, although theoretical elements are essential to them all. The intensity of the courses varies, depending on which ones you choose. We can also be flexible to some degree on the amount of physical effort required for each course, and you don't need to be an olympic athlete for any of them. However, all delegates will need to certify that they are medically fit prior to course commencement. Whilst we have an excellent safety record and our trainers are fully insured, the nature of self-defence training is such that we cannot absolutely guarantee that no injuries will occur. If you can't see exactly what you're looking for on our list, just let us know what you want and we'll help you to design a customised course that meets your needs, including any important aspects that you may have overlooked. Don't be a victim of crime. Don't leave it to chance. Stay safe by design.
