Course Outlines:
Avoiding and Dealing with Bullying and Harassment
Our starting point is to understand what bullying and harassment are, how widespread they are, and how they can arise, even inadvertently. We also consider the consequences, including personal and organisational impact, and the risk of litigation. We look at typical behaviour patterns and the management challenges in dealing with them, and we look at the options for overcoming bullying and harassment on both a corporate/institutional level and an individual level. Conflict Management and Dispute Resolution Conflicts and disputes are part of life, personally and occupationally, and learning how to deal with them effectively is an important skill, particularly when a conflict evolves into a confrontation. On this course you will gain an understanding of what conflict is, and how to recognise it early to manage it better. You will learn how people react in a conflict situation and the strategies you can use to produce a positive outcome. A natural course to combine with this one is our Negotiation Skills course. Personal Security Essentials - at home, at work, in the street and in transit More than 2 million violent crimes occurred in Britain last year (2009). How many of them occurred in your area? What are the risks you face every day, possibly without realising? Prevention is better than cure. What do you need to know and do, to avoid becoming a victim of crime? Awareness is the starting point in learning to secure your personal safety. Learn critical awareness and alertness skills you can use anywhere – at home, at work, in the street, in your car, or on public transport. Learn how to avoid potentially difficult situations and plan your exit strategies. Understand how you are likely to be targeted and approached, what deceptive tactics may be employed, and what you should do in those situations to stay safe. Personal Security Training for Community Workers Working in the community carries risks, especially if you are routinely unaccompanied. Have you identified and evaluated those risks? Do you have an effective strategy in place to manage and reduce them. Understand the importance of awareness, assessment, planning, communication, assertiveness, exit strategies and simple breakaway and escape skills. This course can include the physical breakaway and escape skills training, or they can be dealt with separately. Personal Security Training for Travelling Personnel If you travel to earn your living, you encounter risks to your personal security that can easily be addressed with the guidance and assistance you will receive on this course. Learn to identify, manage and reduce the risks you face when travelling on foot, by car, by train or on a bus or coach. Do you stay in hotels? What are the risks? Do you have plans and routines in place to deal with them? Risk-of-Violence Assessment, Awareness and Avoidance Training

The outcome is a tool kit of knowledge, awareness and skills to enable you to create and implement an effective prevention and management strategy within your organisation.
Your lifestyle, routines and occupation determine the extent to which you are exposed to the risk of crime on a daily basis. Are you aware of the risks you are taking, or (like most people) are you just drifting along in blissful ignorance? Have you assessed the likelihood of a problem occurring? Personal Security Day (includes self-protection and basic self-defence) This course can run for more than one day, depending on your requirements and the depth of knowledge and skill you're seeking. It combines both of the critical aspects of self-protection in one package. You will learn the most crucial aspects of personal security, to minimise the risk of violent confrontation, together with the most fundamental skills of physical self-defence. The physical aspects of the course are not overly demanding and you do not need any real fitness or prior experience to engage in it and benefit to the fullest extent. Completion of the course will arm you with the knowledge and skills to significantly increase your prospects of staying safe in any situation. Understanding and Managing Fear Your throat's dry, your hands and knees are shaking uncontrollably, your stomach is churning, you want to be sick, you can't think, you can't move – fear is a terrible thing. Or is it? Learn how and why your mind and body change in a crisis, how the changes will impact on your ability to protect yourself, and what you can do to actually use fear to your advantage – how it can propel you into powerful action rather than freezing you in blind terror. Understand how confidence plays a role, and learn skills to develop your own confidence in your ability to act effectively in the situations you fear most. Understanding Predatory Crime, Victim Behaviour and Personal Security
What factors should you take into account? What simple changes can you make to substantially reduce the risks you face?
Awareness of risk is the primary key to your safety. When you understand the dangers you can anticipate and avoid them. People sometimes divert and avoid danger without ever being aware of it. Sooner or later, their luck may run out. Remove that element of chance. Implement a deliberate personal security strategy for yourself, your colleagues and your family.

How do criminals choose their victims? Are you a potential victim without realising it? What can you do to reduce or eliminate that risk? How will a criminal approach you? What deceptive tactics might they employ? How do you recognise and respond to them? What precautions can you take to remain 'off the criminal's radar'? |
